Survey of the Clothing Behavior for Suitable clothes in Korea and Japan¡¯s Healthy Elderly Women
Oh Hee-Kyoung

Abstract
In order to design suitable clothing that will increase the number of healthy elderly women in Korea, I conducted a study including 195 women over the age of 60 living in the Seoul metropolitan area and 157 women over the age of 60 living in the Tokyo metropolitan area. Analysis was split into specific age ranges, which included 60-64 years old, 65-69 years old, 70-74 years old, and over 75 years old. The findings showed that the proportion of elderly Japanese women who reported to care about their health condition and interest in clothing was significantly higher than that of elderly Korean women. However, elderly Korean women showed significantly higher interest in a variety of considerations, such as price, brand of clothing, current trends, material quality, functionality of the clothing material, comfort, fit, appropriateness of clothes, and looking young. The results further identified differences in clothing purchase preferences between age groups between Korean and Japanese women; fit and functionality showed significantly higher importance in Korean women from ages 60-64 and 65-69 in comparison to Japanese women in the same age groups. Clothing brand and looking young showed significantly higher importance in Korean women from ages 65-69, 70-74, and above 75 in comparison to Japanese women in the same age groups. Still, the results showed that elderly Korean women give the most preference to activity and functionality of clothes while elderly Japanese women have a wider variety of preferences, such as comfort, emotional and practicality of the clothes.
